"This was one of those perfect New England days in late summer where the spirit of autumn takes a first stealing flight, like a spy, through the ripening country-side, and, with feigned sympathy for those who droop with August heat, puts her cool cloak of bracing air about leaf and flower and human shoulders."
~ Sarah Orne Jewett
I've been working for a couple of weeks now, and starting to settle in a little bit. I figure it will probably take at least a month or two to really find a groove, but so far, so good. I really like my job :-)
Summer is starting to wind down... Not the plans (they've gone out of control), but the weather. Despite the craziness of family events and home projects, there are some quiet (beautiful!) mornings like this one when I feel the seasons starting to change.
So many signs! The nights and mornings have gotten cooler, daylight is shortnening, the afternoons are a little breezier, the birds are starting to gather in preparation to migrate, and the smell of corn and ripe or fermenting windfall apples is in the air. Grocery stores and farmer's markets are bursting at the seams with delicious fresh local produce (I'm obsessed with Ontario peaches and sweet corn lately), but there's a sense of things approaching an end.
I think people are starting to feel it too with our calendars, with the 'Back-to-School' sales underway, advertisements for the CNE (which I don't plan on attending this year) and other late-Summer-early-Autumn harvest festivals (the Paris Fair, the St. George Applefest, the Waterford Pumpkin Festival, the Niagara Wine Festival, etc.). Lots to do, lots of fun to be had!
It's exciting, but kind of sad at the same time. To me, August and September are very sentimental months. Autumn is actually my favourite season, but there's a part of it that makes me so wistful and nostalgic. I become lost in memories of all the Autumns past.
And so, ENJOY the rest of the summer, everybody! Go outside, walk/run/bike/hike/swim/garden, soak in the sunshine, shop local, and hopefully September will find us all happy and healthy and geared up for all the next season has to offer. *sniffle* :-)
